A plane is a woodworking tool that is commonly used to reduce the thickness of the lumber to be used for construction and artistic purposes while ensuring that the lumber remains straight throughout and smooth. Usually, planers are hand held and used by using manual power. However, there are a number of kinds of planers such as multifunction, or combination planers, which utilizes electric power. A multifunction planer is one that combines the function of molding and rabbet planes in one tool. As such, multifunction planers are able to cut various molds along the edge of the lumber or wood being used while providing the user the capability to create rabbets, also known as steps, on the piece of lumber being used.
